When you need a pool fence built
There are three common moments. A new pool needs its fence certified before it is filled to 300mm or more. An existing fence may fail an inspection and need repair or replacement. A property being sold or leased needs a pool safety certificate, which depends on a compliant barrier.
For a new pool, the building certifier who approved the pool inspects and certifies the fence. A temporary fence can be relied on for up to three months only if that certifier has approved it, so plan the permanent fence with the pool rather than after it.
Why the rules shape the design
- Height and gaps. At least 1200mm from finished ground level, with no gap over 100mm underneath, measured at right angles on sloping or stepped ground.
- Non-climbable zone. At least one 900mm gap between rails, and climbable objects kept 900mm from the outside and 300mm from the inside.
- Gates. They must not open towards the pool and must self-close and self-latch from any open position.
- CPR sign. A compliant CPR sign must be displayed near the pool.
The pool fence requirements guide explains each rule and the latch measurements in detail.
Glass pool fences
If you are considering glass, QBCC flags a few common problems. Panels must be reinforced glass without fractures. An outside ledge over 10mm can be climbed, which face-fixed or pin-fixed panels avoid. Gaps under panels at stairs often exceed 100mm, and panels can drop or loosen as the ground moves, reducing the fence height. Ask each quote how these are handled.
Repairs to an existing fence
Small repairs to a fence or gate may not need a building approval, but the result must still comply. The fence requirements guide lists which repairs qualify. If a fence is being replaced during a pool renovation, a temporary fence must stand in while sections are out.
